Gas generators and cylinders

Short checks only. This is not a repair procedure. Stop for a smell of gas, a hydrogen or leak shutdown, a damaged fitting or column, or a fault that does not change.

Quick checks

Cause

Empty or isolated cylinder, wrong regulator setting, wrong gas on the fitting, or a generator alarm. An exhausted trap usually ruins the baseline. It rarely removes all pressure.

Check

Confirm cylinder pressure, the live side of the changeover, and the gas identity. Clear a generator alarm before adjusting the GC. Do not force a fitting onto a different gas.

When to call

Call the gas supplier or Mahut if a regulator or generator will not reset. Do not open an interlocked generator cover.

Full notes

A generator or cylinder fault often appears first as a pressure error or a detector that will not ready. Check the cylinder pressure and that the changeover valve is on the live cylinder. Confirm the regulator outlet pressure matches what the instrument expects. Confirm the gas identity at the connection. Do not adapt a fitting to force a different gas onto an inlet.

Generator alarms for purity, water, or compressor shutdown should be cleared on the generator before you adjust the chromatograph. An exhausted moisture or hydrocarbon trap more often ruins the baseline than it removes all pressure. Replace traps on their service interval.

Call Mahut or the gas supplier if a regulator, a generator compressor, or a leak-shutdown will not reset. Do not open generator covers that are interlocked.

Still not restored?

If the system is not restored, the next step is a corrective visit, not a second round of the same fittings.
